If you read my earlier post on teaching kids programming with Minecraft and Lua, you know I think game-based coding is one of the best ways to get kids hooked on programming. But ComputerCraft isn’t the only option. Let’s compare the four major platforms parents and educators actually use.

The Platforms

ComputerCraft (CC: Tweaked) – A Minecraft mod that adds programmable computers and turtles. Kids write real Lua code to automate mining, build farms, and control redstone. The active fork CC: Tweaked supports Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21+ on both Forge and Fabric.

Scratch – MIT’s block-based visual programming environment. Currently on version 3.0 (with 4.0 in early development, potentially including AI features). Over 100 million shared projects. The de facto starting point for young coders.

Code.org – Structured K-12 computer science curriculum used in schools worldwide. Progresses from block-based to text-based coding. Recently expanded with AI Foundations courses for high schoolers and continues aligning with CSTA standards being revised for 2026.

Roblox Studio – Full game development IDE using Luau (a typed superset of Lua 5.1). Kids build and publish 3D games to millions of players. Luau now includes gradual typing, native code generation (1.5-2.5x performance), and string interpolation.

ComputerCraft: Real Code From Day One

The biggest strength of ComputerCraft is that kids write actual Lua from the start. No block-to-text transition. No “now forget everything and learn real syntax.” They type turtle.forward() and a robot moves in Minecraft. The feedback loop is immediate and tangible.

Building a quarry program that mines a 10x10x10 area teaches loops, variables, and functions in a context that matters to the kid. They want the diamonds. The code is the means.

Weakness: Setup complexity. You need Minecraft, a mod loader (Forge or Fabric), and CC: Tweaked installed correctly. For non-technical parents, this is a real barrier. The original ComputerCraft is archived – you must use the CC: Tweaked fork.

Scratch: Lowest Barrier to Entry

Scratch wins on accessibility. Open a browser, drag blocks, make things happen. A 5-year-old can make a cat dance in minutes. The community of 100M+ shared projects means kids can remix and learn from others.

Weakness: The skills don’t transfer to text-based programming. Kids who spend years in Scratch often struggle with the transition to typed syntax. The block paradigm becomes a comfort zone. Scratch 4.0 may address some of this, but no release date is confirmed yet.

Code.org: The Structured Path

Code.org is what schools use, and for good reason. The curriculum is well-designed, progresses logically from blocks to text, and covers K-12 comprehensively. The 2025-2026 curriculum includes AI Foundations blending CS with AI, data science, and cybersecurity.

Weakness: It often feels like schoolwork, because it literally is. The “Hour of Code” gets kids excited, then the structured lessons can feel like a grind. Motivation depends heavily on the teacher.

Roblox Studio: Social Publishing Motivation

Roblox Studio’s killer feature is the audience. Kids can publish games and have real people play them. That social feedback loop is incredibly motivating. Luau is a genuinely modern language with gradual typing and good tooling.

Weakness: The Roblox ecosystem has real concerns. In-game monetization mechanics (Robux, dev exchange) expose kids to economic pressures. Online interactions require active parental monitoring. The platform’s social features are a double-edged sword.

Age and Skill Progression Guide

Ages 5-7: Start with Scratch. Drag-and-drop blocks match their cognitive development. Focus on creative expression, not “learning to code.” Code.org’s CS Fundamentals courses work well here too.

Ages 8-10: Add Code.org, explore Scratch deeply. Kids can handle more structured learning. Code.org’s block-to-text transition starts becoming relevant. If they play Minecraft, try showing them basic ComputerCraft programs.

Ages 10-13: Branch into text-based coding. ComputerCraft if they love Minecraft. Roblox Studio if they’re into game design. Both teach real Lua/Luau. Code.org’s CS Discoveries provides a structured alternative.

Ages 13+: Follow their interests. At this point, the platform matters less than the project. A motivated 13-year-old building Roblox games will learn more than a bored one doing Code.org exercises. Consider adding Python or JavaScript alongside their game platform of choice.

What Actually Works

Research consistently shows game-based coding education improves both engagement and learning outcomes. A 2025 systematic review of 78 studies found that game-based tools effectively support K-12 computational thinking and programming skills, with motivation being the largest effect.

But here’s what the studies don’t capture well: the platform matters far less than the kid’s motivation. A child obsessed with Minecraft will learn more from ComputerCraft in a month than from a year of Scratch they don’t care about. A kid who wants to make games their friends play will grind through Roblox Studio tutorials voluntarily.

My opinionated take:

  1. Don’t start with “what’s best.” Start with what the kid is already excited about.
  2. Scratch is a fine starting point but not a destination. Plan the transition to text-based coding.
  3. ComputerCraft offers the cleanest path from game to real programming. No block-to-text gap. No monetization concerns. Just Lua in Minecraft.
  4. Roblox Studio is powerful but requires active parenting. The social and economic elements need oversight.
  5. Code.org is the safety net. If nothing else sticks, the structured curriculum provides reliable progression.

Final Thoughts

There’s no single best platform. The best one is whichever keeps your kid writing code voluntarily at 9pm on a Saturday when they could be doing anything else. For my money, ComputerCraft hits the sweet spot – real language, beloved game, no distracting monetization – but your kid isn’t my kid.

Start where the enthusiasm is. Transition to text-based coding before age 12 if possible. And remember that the goal isn’t mastering any particular platform; it’s building the habit of thinking computationally and solving problems with code.
