Hot Corners Setup for One-Click macOS Productivity

Hot corners turn the four screen corners into invisible buttons. Flick your cursor into a corner and macOS instantly triggers whatever action you assigned: Mission Control, the Desktop, a locked screen, or Quick Note. Setup takes two minutes and pays off every day.

What you need

  • A Mac on any recent macOS version
  • System Settings access
  • Optional: modifier keys (Command, Option, Shift, Control) if you want accidental-trigger protection

Step by step

  1. Open the settings pane: System Settings, Desktop and Dock, then scroll to the bottom and click Hot Corners.
  2. Assign Mission Control to the top-right corner. This shows all windows and Spaces at once, which is the highest-value trigger for most people.
  3. Assign Desktop to the bottom-left corner. Pushing windows aside to reach files on the Desktop beats minimizing everything by hand.
  4. Assign Quick Note or Notification Centre to the top-left if you use either often; otherwise leave it empty, since empty corners are legitimate choices.
  5. Assign Lock Screen or Start Screen Saver to the bottom-right for a fast privacy move when stepping away from a shared desk.
  6. Add modifiers to risky corners: reopen the dropdown and hold a modifier key while picking an action. Then only Command-plus-corner triggers it, so stray cursor travel stops firing Mission Control mid-presentation.
  7. Rehearse the physical motion for a week. Consistent flicks build muscle memory quickly; deliberate slow moves defeat the purpose.
  8. Combine with keyboard navigation: from a Mission Control triggered by corner, type the first letters of an app name to jump between window groups, then press Return.
  9. Review assignments after two weeks and change any corner you never use. The best configuration is personal; defaults are just a starting grid.

Common mistakes

  • Assigning actions to all four corners immediately, then triggering them accidentally while dragging windows to screen edges.
  • Skipping modifier keys on the lock-screen corner and locking the Mac by accident during normal mouse travel.
  • Forgetting that fullscreen apps swallow corner hits until the menu bar reappears, so test triggers inside fullscreen video too.
