How to Back Up Your Android Phone Before a Factory Reset
A factory reset wipes everything on the phone, and some data is not recoverable from the cloud: authenticator seeds, app logins, and offline files top that list. Run this checklist before you reset and restore becomes a twenty-minute job instead of a disaster.
What you need
- Wi-Fi connection and a charger
- Google account with sufficient Drive or Google One storage
- Optional: USB-C cable, computer, or microSD card for a manual copy
Step by step
- Confirm Google Backup is on: Settings, then Google, then Backup (or Settings, then System, then Backup). Check device backup last-run timestamp, then tap Back up now.
- Verify photos and videos are synced in the Google Photos app under Account, then Photo settings, then Back up. Wait until the queue shows zero pending items.
- Back up SMS and call history. Google's restore covers these only if your Messages app syncs to your account; otherwise export with a dedicated SMS backup tool to a file you copy off-device.
- Export two-factor seeds. Authenticator apps like Google Authenticator require exporting accounts to QR codes or cloud sync before reset; skip this and locked-out accounts follow.
- Note your saved Wi-Fi passwords, which sync automatically if backed up to your Google account, but verify by checking another signed-in device.
- For apps with local databases such as notes, podcasts, or game saves, check each app for an internal export option and save those files to Drive or a computer.
- Copy anything else over USB to a computer: Downloads, WhatsApp media folders under Android/media, recordings, and documents.
- Write down your current lock screen PIN; Android requires it after a factory reset due to factory reset protection, so losing it bricks the setup process.
Common mistakes
- Resetting while a photo backup is still queued because of poor Wi-Fi; always wait for zero pending items.
- Losing authenticator seeds, permanently locking out banking, work, and crypto accounts.
- Forgetting WhatsApp backups live inside WhatsApp's own Google Drive backup, not the general device backup, and must be triggered from within the app.
- Not knowing the screen-lock password, which triggers factory reset protection even with correct Google credentials.
